How buying a used Moncler jacket makes you richer

How buying a used Moncler jacket makes you richer

You won't believe how well used Moncler jackets hold their value

Years ago, long before Vaatela, I had already taken interest in Moncler jackets. I bought my first one used for 430€. The model was Bulgarie, in the black colorway. It was a beautiful jacket which I fell in love with, but after a year of wear and tear I grew out of the jacket and it was time to sell.

I was sceptical about how well the Moncler jacket had held its value at first. I put it up for sale on various local online marketplaces that my friends recommended. My asking price was 380€. To my surprise, I managed to find a buyer for 360€ later during the same day.

How used Moncler jackets actually increase in value over time

Shortly after, I bought my next Moncler jacket. Having more experience in the used Moncler-jacket resale market I searched for a slightly under-market price and bought a beautiful gray Montgenevre for 550€. The jacket sold for around 600€ at the time. The jacket was absolutely stunning and I kept it in pristine condition.

A year went by and it was time to sell again, as I was looking to switch brands. I noticed the aftermarket prices had risen considerably. Now, the same jacket was listed used for approximately 650-720€ at various sources. I decided to price my item at 680€ and see what happens. In just a weeks time the jacket sold for full price. I got to use a beautiful Moncler winter jacket for a whole year, while becoming 130€ richer in the process. Today, the same jacket is sold used for 750-830€.

Another reason for the rise in aftermarket prices is Moncler’s continuous increase of retail prices.

It makes sense that if the retail price of a Moncler winter jacket increases, the aftermarket will follow. The retail price of a Moncler Montgenevre winter jacket was around 1200€ in the year 2020, and today it costs over 2110€. This marks a 176% increase in price over 6 years, or a 10% yearly appreciation on average.

Why doesn't the smart shopper buy their Moncler jacket brand-new for full price then?

The simple answer — because a brand-new Moncler jacket loses around 40-60% of its value the second you step out of the store. This turns a brand-new Moncler jacket into a liability. Something that takes money away from your pocket, making you poorer.

Choosing a cheap fast fashion -jacket is the worst option

Fast fashion jackets lose their value immediately after being worn, and their quality doesn't last from year to year. Hardly anyone wants to buy them second-hand, so their resale value is close to if not zero. If you have the means, go the extra mile and treat yourself to a pre-loved luxury jacket. Your sense of style and wallet will thank you in the long run.

In conclusion: Jacket Economics

How buying a used Moncler jacket makes you richer

  • Fast fashion: You lose 100% of what you spend.
  • Retail luxury: You lose 40–60% of what you spend.
  • Used luxury: The jacket retains its value — and can even increase in price if you take good care of it.
